Practical Ways to Make Your Home a Ministry

I love talking about making our homes ministries. This is the place your family spends a majority of their lives. Your home should be peaceful and reflect heaven. God’s Spirit should be able to thrive in our homes.

Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time.” (2 Chronicles 7:15-16)

But what does making your home a ministry look like in a practical sense?

I’m going to share with you a few ways that I have tried to implement this in the day to day. These are things that you can do durning the mundane moments, the daily routines, and the ends and outs of every week. And these are such simple things to implement that will truly change the way your home feels.

Guard your tongue.

As the caretaker of your home the way you speak and the things you say truly matter.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” (Proverbs 18:21)

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” (Ephesians 4:9)

Those are just a few of the many verse that tell us to guard our tongues. What we say is so important. And how we respond to others are just as important.

So watch what you say to your husband and your kids. Guard your words when you have guests come into your home. And speak truth over your home.

Pray throughout your day.

As homemakers and mothers it can be easy to just go through our mundane tasks everyday without a thought. Or we tend to become frustrated over simple things.

But I want to encourage you to turn those practical moments and tasks into prayers.

Pray while you are washing dishes, folding clothes, or cleaning up a mess. And if you have little ones in your home I would suggest to get into the practice of praying out loud. There is no better way to show your kids how to have a relationship with the Lord.

Care more about people than things.

I don’t know why but it can be so easy to get upset over dirt on the floor after we clean or when our child breaks a dish. For many it is probably because of how we were raised. But I want to encourage you to change your mindset.

Let your kids, your husband, and your guests know that they are more important than things.

Yes, you should stop your child if they are pulling something across the wood floor causing a huge scratch or stop them to explain why we don’t draw on the walls. You can still have a clean and neat home without getting frustrated at your worldly possessions getting ruined.

And just remember that your floor, couch, dishes, or anything else is not worth more to God than the people in your life.

Always be ready to welcome others.

Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.” (1 Peter 4:9)

How we can make sure we are doing this is to take the stress off of ourselves. We can do this by keeping a simple and clean home, having easy dinner recipes under our belts, and having an open mindset at all times.

Know that you are doing kingdom work.

What we do in our homes matter. How we treat our husbands and raise our children matter.

The work we are doing in our homes is kingdom work that should further the Lord’s kingdom.

We are leaving a legacy by the way we live. And how we treat others, live our lives, teach our children, and walk in God’s ways will be our legacy. So how are you living yours?

Remember on those hard days that the work you are doing is so important. God sees the future and your labor will not be in vain.

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58)
