Mornings can either be good or bad. And depending on what season of life you’re in, what time you begin your day may differ.
Right now in the current season I am in with two little boys it is very hard to set a routine. With different sleep schedules, unexpected moments, and the way toddlers view time a strict morning routine has not been possible.
So in this post I want to speak to mamas of littles who may not have the ability to have a designated quiet time in the morning, who can’t wake up before her kids, or who is struggling to get a smooth start to her day so she can serve her family well.
Doing these few things have truly blessed me recently and have helped me set myself up for a Spirit led day.
Start with a prayer for wisdom.
The early season of motherhood is a physically and mentally exhausting one. It’s easy to lose patience when we are correcting all day, didn’t get enough sleep, and forget to take care of ourselves. Unexpected things arise that we may have never expected we would be dealing with.
That is why we need wisdom. We need to ask the Lord for His help and the Spirit’s council as we go throughout the day.
Start your day, even before getting out of bed, with a quick prayer for the Lord to give you wisdom, strength, and patience each day.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” (James 1:5)
Worship in the morning.
If you are having a rough morning, your kids wake up grumpy, or all of you didn’t get enough sleep the night before, turn on worship music. Dance while you are making breakfast. Praise while you are helping your little ones get ready for the day. Sing together while you eat. Nothing can beat a worship session to start your day!
“O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.” (Psalm 5:3)
Quench your little ones’ thirst.
I love putting it this way rather than just making them learn a Bible verse or teach them God’s Word. Yes, that’s what I’m doing but I’m also quenching their thirst.
Your little ones have spirits that are needing to know the truth. And right now your kids are sponges that want absorb truth. So teach them that.
I like to spend some time in the morning pouring into their spirits. This can be by worshiping with them, reading a verse to them and discussing it in a fun way, talking about the fruits of the Spirit, or pulling out something like is in this list.
“You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deuteronomy 11:19)
Fill your cup.
Don’t forget to get the Word into your own mind. I put this last because in this season we may not be able to do this first and the Lord understands that. There are other needs that command our attention first during the morning.
But you do need to get the Word in your day. This may look like turning on an audio Bible while you are wash the dishes from breakfast, tidying up, or on the way to run errands. Or waiting until nap time to actually sit down and open your Bible. That’s what it looks like for me on most days. And that’s okay.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
Setting yourself up for a Spirit led day in the morning can be easy if you give your day to God.
When we let go of control and allow Him to lead us in everything we do in this season our days will get a whole lot better.
And being honest, every day does not look perfect and every morning is not ideal. But that is why God gives us grace and strength to pick back up and try again the next morning. So don’t get discouraged from a bad morning. Just keep worshiping and striving after Him.
