When you become a wife your prioritizes should change from what they once were. And when you become a mom they change again. Then when you have another child and another child and so on, again your prioritizes will need to change so that you can get everything in order.
That is life. You must continually be reworking things and reorganizing your time so that you can be the best version of yourself and get your responsibilities done in a smooth manner.
I have been a wife for over four years now. It took me a while to figure out how to run a home smoothly, plan meals, be a good wife, and everything in between. And I’m still learning. I am no where near where I want to be.
And the same thing when I became a mom. I had to change pretty much all of my life in order to add a new little life to ours. Then I had to do the same thing again when we had our second. A lot of things changed.
The world likes to tell us that we do not need to be controlled by our husband, home, and children. But I want to argue that they don’t control us if our attitude is one of sacrifice and we have hearts of servants.
When I am talking about getting our homes in order I am meaning both the physical and spiritual aspects of our homes. If you are a daughter of God they go hand in hand.
Getting your home in order is a journey. It is a daily decision to allow the Lord to control ourselves and our homes. We can not get anything in order by our own striving. We need God.
I believe there are three steps to getting your in order. But these are big picture steps. Within each you could go in depth so much and spend so much time on every one. But start here and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you.
Get yourself in order.
We are the gatekeepers to our homes. As the wives, mothers, and homemakers we probably spend the most time tending to and living in our homes. So our what our hearts and spirits look like will be a reflection of what our homes look like.
“Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.” (1 Peter 3:3-6)
The only way we are going to get ourselves in order is by being in God’s Word. We need to be seeking Him daily. When we get our hearts in order first we can move onto getting our homes in order.
When we are aligned with God we will be able to pray over our husbands instead of nagging them. We will choose to love them instead of argue that our ways are right. Mother rage will not be a thing in our lives anymore. Hormonal swings will not affect us the same. Disciplining our children will be guided by Scriptures. And the whole way we live our lives from morning until night will look different.
Get your physical home in order.
Depending on the type of housekeeper you are and personality you have this may a difficult step for you. But I want to stress how important it is to have a tidy home.
If you are living in a space that is never cleaned and is so cluttered, your mind and spirit is going to live in the same state. You will have mental clutter, confusion, and just an uneasiness when you walk into your home (and anyone else who comes to visit too!)
So go through your home and get rid of the clutter. Make a cleaning system that works for you.
This is not something I am saying you should stress over. And this shouldn’t be something that takes over your family’s life to the point you can’t get any dirt on the floor or sit on the freshly vacuumed couch.
But have a tidy house that works for you.
Get your spiritual home in order.
At the risk of sounding crazy, your home has a spiritual realm to it, and as the gatekeepers God gives you and your husband authority over your home. So take back that authority.
Welcome the Holy Spirit into your home through prayer, the way you live your life, and what you allow in your home. Don’t be afraid of the enemy and his power. Because God gives us power through Him. We need to get use to using it.
We need to put on the armor of God daily. And we need to cover our homes in that same armor through His Spirit.
“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” (Ephesians 6:11-13)
The devil is trying to get into your home, disrupt your peace, tear your family apart, and destroy what God has made good. That is what we are fighting against, and that is what we need to be getting our homes in order to withstand.
So rise up, sisters! It’s time to get our homes in order for God’s kingdom!
