I’m about to share the basics and all the details of how to actually keep your house clean at all times. It’s going to be simple and straightforward.
We all want a clean home. Clutter isn’t appealing. Dirt isn’t welcoming.
Depending on your home, personality, capacity, and season of life, having a clean house may be easier said than done. But this is what you need to do.
To keep your house clean at all times you need a cleaning system for each day, week, month, and season.
Let’s break this down.
Each day you need to do a quick tidy a few times a day. Do a load of laundry, especially if you have more than three members in your family. Wash dishes or place in the dishwasher after every meal or time spent cooking. Do a quick sweep or vacuum of the main floors and make sure the kitchen is clean every night.
When you do these things daily the main places in your home feel clean and easy to live in.
Now each day of the week you will pick one “major” chore to do. These are things like cleaning the bathrooms, mopping, dusting, washing your bedding, or cleaning the refrigerator.
You can even assign a week day to each of these chores. Monday is when you clean the refrigerator. Tuesday is when the floors get mopped. And so on.
Then to keep your home actually clean you choose a larger chore to do once a month.
Wash the windows. Scrub or dust the baseboards. Dust the hard to reach places. And do a quick declutter of things around your home.
And to take it even a step farther, mark on your calendar a time to do a seasonal clean. Plan ahead so it will actually happen. This could take a few days every few months or just happen a couple times a year. I like to do a spring clean before we celebrate Passover and then another one in the winter when we are stuck inside more due to the colder weather.
For a seasonal clean you can choose to clean as much as you want, but here are some ideas. Do a deep declutter of every room, closet, and drawer in your home. Wash curtains. Oil wood furniture. Clean the outside of the windows. Clean carpets and upholstery. Pressure wash outside furniture and porches.
When you have a plan it’s really not that hard to actually keep your house clean all year long.
It does not mean that your home is not lived in. A lived in home looks used but not like a complete mess with cluttered countertops, bursting closets, and piles of laundry on every bed.
A clean home looks like one that is managed efficiently and cared for wisely.
So do not stress when there are a few items scattered about or when laundry is a day behind. Cleaning a home is not a burden for you to constantly be overwhelmed by. It is a blessing and a ministry. Your home reflects the Lord and a part of His Kingdom. It’s your job to keep it in order ultimately for Him.
