There are so many articles and sources that say that essential oils are harmful to children. But I don’t think that’s true.
Now I’m definitely not a doctor or a healthcare professional. But I am a mother and I have seen the benefits of using essential oils on my boys.
If you have been skeptical or worried about trying essential oils on your littles or even around your children this post is for you.
I’m going to break down how to use oils, which oils are safe to use, which need to be used with caution, how to dilute them if needed, and so much more!
If you have any questions about whether using essential oils on your little ones is worth it, keep reading!
How to use essential oils on your little ones:
There are so many different ways to use oils on your babies and toddlers. You can add drops to their bath, make a linen spray for their bed, and diffuse some in their room. There are plenty of options.
But if you are wanting essential oils to work the quickest you will need to apply them or smell it directly. And here’s how to do that—
Rub some on your little one’s chest, bottom of feet, behind the ears, or wrists.
And then teach them how to do a scent tent. Place a small drop of oil in their hand. Have them rub it together. Then help them cup their hands over their nose and breathe in. Or better yet, do it along with them and let them copy you.
Which oils are safe for little ones:
Most essential oils are safe to use on and around your little ones.
The only thing I would use caution about when buying oils is to definitely avoid the cheaper oils. Many of those are cut with bad carrier oils or have had fragrance added to them. You do not want to use that on your babies!
And then hotter oils like peppermint, clove, cinnamon bark, etc. will probably be the most “dangerous.” If you don’t have newborns, you can diffuse these types of oils safely. And if you’re needing to apply them, dilute them first!
How and when to dilute:
Diluting oils is going to be your go to especially with babies. Their new skin absorbs everything and is much more reactive than our adult skin.
So a good rule of thumb is to definitely dilute essential oils if you are using essential oils on babies younger than six months.
After six months you can use the calm oils like lavender, cedarwood, etc. directly. And for the hotter oils like I mentioned above you should probably dilute them until your children are nine or ten.
Just remember, you’re their mother and you will know when and what’s best for your little ones!
And if you’re wondering how to dilute essential oils it’s very simple! Add a few drops of essential oil to a roller bottle and fill the rest with a carrier oil (I like jojoba or coconut oil!) And as your child gets older you can add more than a few drops when you are diluting.
Which oils are the best for babies and toddlers:
So I am in the thick of early motherhood right now. We have a six month old and a two year old. There are many big emotions, late nights, and a lot of coping in between.
Essential oils have been such a blessing to me the past few months. I have incorporated them into my parenting and it has been a life changer with my toddler.
These are some of my favorites that help with big emotions, tantrums, stressful situations, sleepless nights, and more!
These six have been my go tos the past few months and are pulled out often.
