Tips for Reading the Bible for a Toddler Mom

Right now in this season of having two under three my quiet time looks far from quiet. Reading God’s Word doesn’t look like it did when I didn’t have kids or even when I was single.

But I know how important reading the Bible is to me in this season of being a toddler mom. Without God’s Word I am not going to be able to care for my kids well, serve my family, and continue in righteousness.

That’s why all moms need to be reading the Bible.

So here are some tips that worked for me to still get my Bible reading in even in the busyness of being a toddler mom. Hopefully they can help you too!

Strive for quality over quantity.

Because of how many interruptions are in this season it’s hard for me to sit down and read so many chapters of the Bible. It will take me little moments from all day to do that. So I try to concentrate on the quality instead of the quantity. Because I still believe that God can teach and pour into you even if you read half a chapter a day.

Do away with in-depth studies.

Again in this season it is hard for me to do pre-written studies. It’s difficult to have notebooks open, for me to be taking a bunch of notes, and for their to be so many things for me to grab off the shelf in order for me to read the Bible. Unless there is something specific that the Lord lays on my heart to study, I will just stick to reading His Word and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide.

Put down your phone.

Do you know how much time you would have if you just stopped scrolling? If you replaced the time your were mindlessly using your phone with reading the Bible you would be able to read so much more!

Use an audio Bible.

While you are washing dishes or folding laundry it may be hard to be physically reading your Bible during these tasks. But you can turn on an audio Bible and still be getting God’s truth into your day. I love Streetlights for this!

Study whenever you have a minute.

Get into the habit of just having your Bible open. Then when you have lags throughout the day go and read a few verses. Use the time while the water is boiling, when you’re feeding the baby, or as you’re waiting for dinner to finish cooking, get some of the Word in.

Do away with systems.

I use to have a highlighting and journaling system when reading the Bible. But in this season it is just hard to do. I will end up just grabbing a few highlighters before sitting down to read. So having a system is just hard to do. Now I just underline, highlight, and journal just by whatever the Spirit is leading me to do. And it has really helped simplify my Bible reading.

Being a toddler mom is such a trying season of life. And that is why we need to be getting God’s Word into our minds and hearts.

Don’t not say to yourself that you just don’t have time to read the Bible or that God doesn’t mind if you skip it today.

Yes, He understands and He is gracious. But think about how He feels if He sees you scrolling Instagram instead of choosing to have His truth poured into your mind.

This season of life is very tiring but that is exactly why we need to make room for reading the Bible. Through God’s Spirit we will receive strength, patience, self-control, and everything else we need to be the mom we need to be to our little ones.
