So you’re a Christian. You follow the Lord and strive to do His will. Reading your Bible and praying is something that you do daily. And you try to be as set-apart from the world as you possibly can.
But you encounter unbelievers—people who necessarily don’t believe in God. How do you respond?
Whether these unbelievers are seeking to know more about God or just want to be your friend, what should you do?
Verses such as 2 Corinthians 6:14 may confuse the Christian girl: “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?“
As you first read this you may think that, as believers, we should have nothing to do with unbelievers and run the other way. But this is not the case.
We are called to be a light to the world (Matt. 5:14).
As God’s followers, we are the only examples that this dark world has. We are called to show unbelievers God’s great love.
So what relationship can a Christian have with an unbeliever?
First of all, it is completely okay to be friends with unbelievers. But not super close.
Save your close friendships for other believers who will lift you up and encourage you on your walk of faith.
Secondly, be a light to them.
You may be there only example of God’s love in their life. Don’t miss the opportunity to show them of how great God’s love is.
Thirdly, tell them of God’s goodness.
I believe that first, as believers, we need to show others of God’s love. And then tell them about it.
Second Corinthians 4:4 says, “In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.“
We need to help them see the light. Don’t be afraid of sharing the gospel with unbelievers and telling them of God’s great love. It will be scary at first, but ask the Lord to help and guide you.
And finally, pray for them.
This is so important. Praying for an unbeliever changes something inside them. This shows that you care and are thinking of them. And even if they don’t believe in God, this could change everything.
God does not want believers to dismiss unbelievers.
We are their examples. Our light needs to shine upon them. God has called you to show this dark world His love. So let’s start shining bright for Him!
In His amazing love,
Hannah Marie
