Is It Biblical to Anoint Your Home?

Anointing your home is not a normal thing. It’s honestly rarely heard of among families, believers or not. So is it actually biblical to anoint your home?

There is no commandment in the Bible that says “thou shalt anoint the doorpost of your dwelling place.” Yet there are many things that we have to figure out on our own, being led by the Holy Spirit, in this day and age.

So is it biblical to anoint your home?

Let’s dive into this question by starting with a different question. What is anointing?

Whenever we see someone anointing something or someone else with oil in God’s Word it is because God’s Spirit is upon them.

And the Lord said, ‘Arise, anoint him, for this is he.’ Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward.” (1 Samuel 16: 12b-13)

So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it.” (Genesis 28:18)

Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them.” (Leviticus 8:10)

You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests.” (Exodus 30:30)

And there are so many other places that express this same point. I would encourage you to study those for yourself.

But anytime that someone is anointing it is because they want the Lord’s Spirit to dwell there or He has been there before.

So should we anoint our homes? If we want the Holy Spirit to work and dwell within our homes then I say yes.

Just like David was anointed to be king and Jacob’s stone pillar was anointed as a remembrance, I want my home to have God’s Spirit as well. I want our dwelling place to be a place where the Lord works His will and where His presence is continually welcomed.

It’s hard in the culture but having a pure home where God’s Spirit can thrive is something special.

And anointing your home is a way to open your home up for the Lord to use, work in, and dwell. That will set your home apart from all others.

If you’ve been wondering if you should start anointing your doorposts, tv, beds, table, and anything else in your home I pray that this post helped you make a decision. But I do want to say that I don’t believe you need oil for God to answer your prayers or live within your home. It’s so much more than oil.

But it is a way to welcome God’s Spirit and show how important His presence in your home is.
