Clinging to God When Hope Can’t Be Found

The three women walked down the dusty road. They moved in silence until Naomi came to a stop.

“Girls, go back to your mother’s homes,” she said. “Go back to what is familiar to you.”

Soon one of Naomi’s daughters-in-law, Orpah, kissed her mother-in-law and went back to the place she knew. But the other daughter-in-law, Ruth, clung to Naomi.

But Ruth said, ‘Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the LORD do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.’” (Ruth 1:16-17)

Ruth was determined to stay with Naomi. Even if it meant going to a place she did not know.

At the beginning of the first chapter of Ruth, we are told that all three of the women’s husbands had died. All hope seemed to be gone for each of them.

Naomi chose to go back to the land and people she knew. Orpah chose to go back to her old home and her family. But Ruth chose the hard path.

Ruth chose to go into the unknown when her hope couldn’t be found.

Verse 14 tells us that Ruth clung to Naomi. She held fast to her mother-in-law. Ruth chose to follow Naomi. She chose to give up what was familiar and go into the unknown.

When you face trials and difficult circumstances in your life, your hope may seem as if it can’t be found. That is when you need to cling to God.

God is your hope.

He promises to never leave you or forsake you. He says He will always be with you. Even in the unknown, He is by your side. When all hope seems lost, He is still leading you on the right path.

You just have to trust Him and His ways.

It can be hard when life catches you off guard. Whether you lost a loved one like Ruth did or you are facing another type of heartache, know that you can cling to God. He is the only one that will get you through this season of life.

In His amazing love,
