Rethinking Your View of Beautification

She was beautiful. Her lips and eyes were painted in beautiful colors. And her hair was intricately braided. She was adorned in gold jewelry and fine clothes.

Jezebel was beautiful. And King Ahab fell for her beauty.

Although Jezebel may have been beautiful, her heart was deceitful and wicked.

Jezebel’s story is told in 1 Kings. And her story was not a pretty one. Even though she made herself beautiful by painting her eyes and wearing nice things, her heart was not in the least beautiful.

Many times in the Scriptures the idea of beauty and beautification is shown with a bad meaning, like Jezebel for example.

And we when we read 1 Peter 3:3-4 we can easily get the same idea: “Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear–but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.

Does wearing jewelry and braiding your hair make you wicked? Is it a sin? Does it mean that you are not very precious in God’s sight?

When these verses were written, women who painted their face with makeup, who wore jewelry, and who braided their hair were prostitutes and wicked women. So godly women would want to steer away from such things.

But in today’s culture enhancing your beauty is thought of as natural. Every woman does it. It is not thought of as wicked and sinful anymore.

So if you chose to wear makeup, dress in fashionable clothes, and braid your hair, that is totally okay. But you need to keep your focus on God.

Proverbs 31:30 says it this way, “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Their is nothing wrong with enhancing your beauty. But you have to keep your heart right.

If beauty becomes an idol in your life then you may need to rethink your view of beautification and realign your heart toward the Lord.

In His amazing love,
